Marquita Meredith, Armed Cocaine Distribution, Virginia 2024

Published March 5, 2020

Newport News, VA - In a shocking turn of events, Marquita Meredith, a 37-year-old Hampton woman, has been sentenced to over seven years in prison for possessing cocaine for distribution while in possession of a firearm. This disturbing case highlights the dark underbelly of the city's streets, where even the most vulnerable are not immune to the allure of the illicit drug trade.

According to court documents, Meredith was convicted of distributing cocaine from her residence in Hampton. The evidence against her was overwhelming, with authorities recovering over an ounce of cocaine from her residence in January 2019. What's more, children were present in the home at the time of the search warrant, a stark reminder of the devastating impact of the drug trade on families and communities.

Meredith's troubles began in November 2017, when she was stopped by police in Newport News. During the traffic stop, officers discovered over half an ounce of cocaine and a firearm in her possession. The fact that she was pregnant at the time of the arrest only adds to the tragedy of this case.

As part of the Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) initiative, Meredith's case is a stark reminder of the need for a comprehensive approach to addressing violent crime. Through PSN, a broad spectrum of stakeholders work together to identify the most pressing violent crime problems in the community and develop solutions to address them.

Senior U.S. District Judge Rebecca Beach Smith presided over the sentencing hearing, which was attended by U.S. Attorney G. Zachary Terwilliger and FBI Special Agent in Charge Martin Culbreth. Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Amy E. Cross prosecuted the case.

In a statement, Terwilliger highlighted the importance of PSN in reducing violent crime. 'This case is a prime example of how PSN is making a difference in our community,' he said. 'By working together, we can identify and disrupt the most violent offenders and bring them to justice.'

Meredith's sentence is a sobering reminder of the consequences of armed cocaine distribution. As the community continues to grapple with the fallout of this crime, one thing is clear: the war on drugs is far from over.
