Published August 21, 2025

A brutal fentanyl and methamphetamine trafficking ring in Magoffin County, Kentucky, has been dealt a significant blow with the sentencing of Marvin Hunter, Jr., the mastermind behind the operation. Hunter, 32, a Pontiac, Michigan, native, was sentenced to 132 months in prison for conspiracy to distribute controlled substances, including 500 grams or more of methamphetamine and 40 grams or more of fentanyl.

According to the investigation, Hunter regularly imported methamphetamine and fentanyl from Michigan into Magoffin County between August 2021 and March 7, 2024. He had local associates in the county who assisted him in distributing the drugs to other dealers and users. The operation was based out of a residence in Magoffin County, where law enforcement discovered over a kilogram of methamphetamine, over 40 grams of fentanyl, and three firearms during a search in April 2023.

Law enforcement used a confidential informant to make controlled purchases of methamphetamine and fentanyl from Hunter, further implicating him in the conspiracy. Hunter's co-defendants, Jennifer Fletcher, 45, and Minnie Johnson, 60, both of Salyersville, Kentucky, were previously sentenced to 84 months in prison and five years of supervised release.

Under federal law, Hunter must serve 85 percent of his prison sentence. Upon his release, he will be under the supervision of the U.S. Probation Office for five years.

The investigation was conducted by the DEA and the Magoffin County Sheriff's Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Drew Trimble is prosecuting the case on behalf of the United States.
