GREAT FALLS — Marvin James Cole, a 28-year-old Dodson man, was sentenced to 18 months in prison for his role in a vehicle crash that left another driver seriously injured on the Fort Belknap Indian Reservation.
According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Cole crashed his GMC truck into a Dodge Avenger driven by an unidentified victim on June 22, 2022, on Highway 66 near Harlem. The victim, whose name was not released, suffered serious injuries and was treated at a hospital in Seattle.
A toxicology report revealed that Cole had amphetamine and methamphetamine in his blood at the time of the crash. Cole admitted that he likely drifted into the other lane when he looked at his phone.
Cole pleaded guilty to assault resulting in serious bodily injury in October 2023. He was sentenced by Chief U.S. District Judge Brian M. Morris.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office prosecuted the case, with assistance from the FBI, Fort Belknap Law Enforcement, Montana Highway Patrol, and Phillips County Sheriff’s Office.
Cole will serve 18 months in prison followed by three years of supervised release. The case serves as a reminder of the dangers of distracted driving and the importance of prioritizing road safety.
