CRIME: Vermont Woman Steals Over $119,000 in Social Security Benefits
Burlington, Vermont – In a shocking case of exploitation, Maryann Manning, 63, of Wolcott, Vermont, has been sentenced for stealing her late brother's Social Security benefits.
On December 2, 2024, Chief United States District Judge Christina Reiss handed down a two-year probation sentence to Manning. Additionally, she was ordered to pay $119,978 in restitution to the Social Security Administration.
According to court records, Manning's brother received disability insurance benefit payments from the Social Security Administration following a disability. However, when her brother passed away in October 2015, his benefits should have ceased. Nevertheless, Manning continued to collect her brother's benefits, withdrawing the money from his accounts.
Manning admitted to investigators that she knew she was stealing money that did not belong to her. The total loss to the Social Security Administration was a staggering $119,978.
United States Attorney Nikolas P. Kerest commended the investigatory efforts of the Social Security Administration's Office of the Inspector General.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Zachary Stendig. Manning was represented by Robert Behrens, Esq.
