Marybeth Jiron, Assaulting a Federal Officer, New Mexico 2019
A 56-year-old woman from Isleta Pueblo, New Mexico, has been charged with assaulting a federal officer in Indian Country.
Marybeth Jiron, an enrolled member of the Pueblo of Isleta, allegedly attacked federal officers on January 31, 2019, when police responded to an emergency call reporting that Jiron was walking in and out of traffic on a highway.
According to documents filed in court, officers found Jiron yelling and belligerent when they arrived on the scene. Jiron threw a cigarette lighter at one of the officers, hitting the officer in the leg. She also flicked a burning cigarette in the officer's eye.
When a second officer tried to intervene, Jiron hit the second officer in the face, bruising the officer's cheek.
Jiron is currently in custody pending trial and faces up to 8 years in prison if convicted. The Pueblo of Isleta Police Department investigated this case, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Allison Jaros is prosecuting the case.
Indictments are only accusations. A defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
