Matthew Allen Sumpter, Methamphetamine and Gun Possession, Iowa 2025

DES MOINES, Iowa - A Marshalltown man was caught with nearly a pound of methamphetamine, a scale, cash, and a loaded handgun, leading to a 17-year federal prison sentence.

Matthew Allen Sumpter, 39, was found in possession of the illicit substances and firearms in October 2024. According to public court documents, Sumpter was responsible for distributing multiple pounds of methamphetamine in the Marshalltown area. This is not his first run-in with the law, as he has multiple prior felony convictions, including prohibited person in possession of a firearm, harassment, domestic abuse assault by strangulation, and multiple eluding convictions.

After completing his term of imprisonment, Sumpter will be required to serve a five-year term of supervised release. There is no parole in the federal system.

Sumpter was sentenced on September 12, 2025 for the possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine and possession of a firearm in furtherance of drug trafficking.

This case was investigated by the Mid-Iowa Drug Task Force and the Marshall County Sheriff’s Office.
