SIOUX CITY, IA – Matthew Antonovich, 39, of Sioux City, is headed to federal prison after admitting to running a methamphetamine operation and illegally possessing a weapon. The sentence, handed down February 1, 2023, sends a clear message that drug dealing and firearms violations won’t be tolerated in the area, despite local law enforcement being stretched thin.
Antonovich pleaded guilty back on June 21, 2022, to one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm and one count of conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine. Court documents reveal Antonovich wasn’t just a user – he was actively involved in selling the drug throughout Sioux City. Adding to the danger, he had a short-barreled shotgun despite a prior felony conviction, making him a clear and present threat.
Chief Judge Leonard T. Strand of the United States District Court delivered the sentence: 50 months in federal prison. Unlike state systems, there’s no parole in the federal system, meaning Antonovich will serve the full term. Following his release, he’ll face an additional three years of supervised release, a period where his movements and activities will be closely monitored.
The investigation was a multi-agency effort, highlighting the widespread impact of methamphetamine on the region. The Iowa Division of Narcotics Enforcement, Woodbury County Sheriff’s Department, Sioux City Police Department, South Sioux City Police Department, Nebraska State Patrol, the United States Postal Service, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives all contributed to bringing Antonovich to justice. This wasn’t a quick bust; it was a coordinated takedown.
Antonovich is currently in the custody of the United States Marshals Service, awaiting transfer to a designated federal prison facility. Assistant United States Attorney Jack Lammers prosecuted the case, building a solid case based on evidence gathered by the various law enforcement agencies involved. Details of the court file are publicly accessible at https://ecf.iand.uscourts.gov/cgi-bin/login.pl.
This conviction is just one piece of a larger battle against the flow of methamphetamine into Iowa and surrounding states. While the ATF and other agencies celebrate this win, sources within the department acknowledge the endless cycle of arrests and prosecutions, with new dealers quickly emerging to fill the void. The demand for the drug remains high, and the profits are too tempting for many to resist.
