Matthew Hornung, Methamphetamine Trafficking & Firearms Possession, Wisconsin 2020
WITTENBERG, WI - In a shocking turn of events, former Wausau resident Matthew Hornung, 36, has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for his role in a methamphetamine trafficking and firearms possession ring at a tribal casino in Wittenberg, WI.
According to court records, Hornung was at the casino on October 16, 2019, when he was caught with approximately 41 grams of methamphetamine with a purity of greater than 80%. He fled on foot from officers and threw a loaded 9mm semiautomatic handgun during the chase.
Hornung pleaded guilty to possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine and possession of a firearm in furtherance of drug trafficking. He was sentenced to 60 months in prison for each charge, with the sentences to run consecutively.
The investigation was led by the Central Wisconsin Narcotics Task Force and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, with assistance from the Drug Enforcement Administration and the Shawano County Sheriff's Office. Assistant United States Attorney Andrew J. Maier prosecuted the case.
This case is part of the Project Safe Neighborhoods initiative, a federal, state, and local law enforcement collaboration to reduce violent crime in neighborhoods. Project Safe Neighborhoods brings together all levels of law enforcement and community resources to identify, investigate, and prosecute individuals responsible for violent crimes.
In sentencing Hornung, Senior United States District Judge William C. Griesbach noted the seriousness of the crime and the need to enforce laws related to firearm possession to deter others from similar actions.
