Matthew Knowles, Illicit Firearms Possession, Iowa 2024
A 38-year-old Fort Dodge man has been sentenced to federal prison for illegally possessing firearms.
Matthew Knowles, from Fort Dodge, Iowa, was sentenced on September 20, 2024, in federal court in Sioux City.
A search warrant executed at Knowles' residence on November 10, 2022, revealed thousands of dollars of stolen tools, a .380 ACP pistol, and a .410-gauge shotgun, as well as controlled substances. Evidence presented during the plea and sentencing hearings showed that Knowles was a user of methamphetamine, marijuana, and was a felon at the time of the possession.
As a felon and drug user, Knowles was prohibited from possessing firearms. The recovered firearms and controlled substances were seized as part of an investigation into stolen property.
The case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence by bringing together law enforcement and community organizations.
Knowles was sentenced to 15 months' imprisonment and must serve a two-year term of supervised release after his imprisonment. He remains in custody of the United States Marshal until he can be transported to a federal prison.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Patrick T. Greenwood and was investigated by the Webster County Sheriff's Office, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and Iowa DCI Laboratory.
