A Sac City, Iowa man has been sentenced to federal prison for his role in a methamphetamine conspiracy.

Matthew Wessels, 36, received a 78-month prison term after pleading guilty to conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine on March 15, 2017.

The charges stem from a methamphetamine conspiracy that began in 2014 and continued through February 2016. During that time, Wessels is accused of distributing at least 500 grams of actual methamphetamine.

According to court documents, law enforcement conducted controlled purchases of methamphetamine from Wessels on August 26 and 27, 2014, and July 21, 2015. Additionally, on February 26 and May 17, 2017, law enforcement seized about 15 grams of methamphetamine from Wessels' vehicle and residence, respectively.

Wessels admitted to purchasing and redistributing smaller quantities of methamphetamine to numerous customers throughout central Iowa.

Wessels was sentenced in Sioux City by United States District Court Chief Judge Leonard T. Strand. In addition to the 78-month prison term, Wessels must also serve a four-year term of supervised release after his release from prison. A special assessment of $100 was imposed.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Shawn S. Wehde and investigated by the Iowa Division of Narcotics Enforcement, Buena Vista County Sheriff's Department, Sac County Sheriff's Department, Sac City Police Department, and Iowa DCI Criminalistics Laboratory.
