Mehmet Hakan Atilla, Conspiring to Violate U.S. Sanctions, New York 2018

Mehmet Hakan Atilla, a Turkish Banker, Sentenced to 32 Months for Conspiring to Violate U.S. Sanctions
New York, NY - In a significant blow to international financial crime, Mehmet Hakan Atilla, a Turkish banker, was sentenced to 32 months in prison for his participation in a scheme to violate U.S. economic sanctions imposed on the Islamic Republic of Iran involving billions of dollars’ worth of Iranian oil proceeds held at his employer, Turkish Bank-1.
According to the evidence introduced at trial, Atilla and others conspired to provide access to restricted oil revenues through international financial networks, including U.S. financial institutions, to the government of Iran, Iranian entities, and entities identified by the Department of the Treasury Office of Foreign Assets Control as Specially Designated Nationals (SDNs).
Geoffrey S. Berman, the United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York, announced that Atilla was sentenced by United States District Judge Richard M. Berman for his crimes.
As a unanimous jury found earlier this year, Atilla helped execute an audacious scheme to circumvent our nation’s Iran sanctions regime by engaging in billions of dollars’ worth of deceptive transactions.
Berman said, “As a unanimous jury found earlier this year, Mehmet Hakan Atilla helped execute an audacious scheme to circumvent our nation’s Iran sanctions regime by engaging in billions of dollars’ worth of deceptive transactions. Today, following full, fair, and public legal proceedings, Atilla has been sentenced for his crimes.”
