Published August 15, 2025

Atlanta, GA - In a major blow to Georgia's underworld, Mekael Desean Daniels, a notorious four-time convicted drug trafficker, has been sentenced to 292 months in prison for possessing with intent to distribute cocaine and fentanyl. The 55-year-old Dallas, Georgia resident's reign of terror has finally come to an end, thanks to the tireless efforts of law enforcement agencies.

According to the investigation, Daniels was storing 110 kilograms of cocaine and 62 grams of fentanyl at a Buckhead-area condominium building, with the intent to distribute them to his network. Agents also found approximately $66,000 in drug proceeds, a drug ledger documenting $500,000 in transactions, and a bag containing $500,000 in the condominium garage. A shoebox containing $100,000, also linked to Daniels, was discovered in the garage.

The charges against Daniels include conspiracy to possess with the intent to distribute cocaine and fentanyl, with the case being investigated by the Drug Enforcement Administration and Federal Bureau of Investigation. Assistant United States Attorneys Elizabeth M. Hathaway and Austin M. Hall, with the assistance of former Assistant United States Attorney Joshua May, prosecuted the case.

This is not Daniels' first rodeo, as he has three prior federal drug trafficking convictions, including possession with intent to distribute cocaine in 1995 and 2000, and possession with intent to distribute heroin in 2012. In 2000, he was also convicted of possessing a firearm while a convicted felon. Despite his previous convictions, Daniels continued to traffic vast quantities of narcotics in the community.

United States District Judge Steven D. Grimberg handed down the sentence on [date], noting that Daniels' lengthy prison term should serve as a stern warning to other career criminals who continue to peddle deadly fentanyl and cocaine. The sentence will be followed by a lifetime of supervised release.

The case is part of Operation Take Back America, an Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETF) Strike Force Initiative aimed at dismantling transnational criminal organizations and money laundering networks. This collaborative effort between law enforcement agencies has led to the dismantling of numerous networks and the prosecution of high-profile cases like Daniels'.
