Heroin Trafficking Ring Cracks Down in Pennsylvania
In a move to curb the growing heroin epidemic, a Brooklyn woman was sentenced to 18 months in prison for her role in a trafficking operation that supplied the deadly drug to Scranton and Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania.
Merisol Merry, 40, was found guilty of trafficking in excess of 100 grams of heroin after a joint investigation by the Drug Enforcement Agency in Scranton, the Lackawanna County District Attorney’s Office – Detective Division, the Pennsylvania State Police, as well as both the Scranton and Wilkes-Barre Police Departments.
The investigation, which involved the prosecution of seven other defendants, revealed a conspiracy to possess and distribute heroin from New York to Scranton and Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. Merry was charged by way of Information on April 18, 2013, and originally waived indictment.
According to court documents, Merry distributed and possessed with intent to distribute at least 100 but less than 400 grams of heroin, a Schedule I controlled substance, between September 2011 through May 2012 in the Southern District of New York.
Assistant United States Attorney Michelle Olshefski prosecuted the case, which brought to justice those involved in a massive heroin trafficking operation.
The sentence handed down by United States District Court Judge Robert D. Mariani also includes two years of supervised release, underscoring the severity of the crime and the need for continued efforts to combat the heroin epidemic.
