Mervin Amacker, Carjacking and Federal Firearm Charge, Louisiana 2025

A New Orleans man is facing up to 15 years in prison after pleading guilty to carjacking and a federal firearm charge.

Mervin Amacker, 43, was charged with carjacking, in violation of 18 U.S.C. §2119(1), and felon in possession of a firearm, in violation of 18 U.S.C. §§ 922(g)(1) and 924(a)(8).

The crime occurred on March 8, 2023, when Amacker boarded a New Orleans Regional Transit Authority bus at Hayne Boulevard and Lacombe Street in New Orleans East.

Amacker produced a firearm and demanded to be driven to the hospital, threatening to shoot or kill the driver at various points.

The bus arrived at the hospital, and Amacker demanded that the driver proceed up the ramp to the emergency room entrance. Amacker then exited the bus, walked into the emergency room, and was admitted, claiming to be suffering from a gunshot wound.

Amacker was found to be in possession of a loaded Ruger Model 9E, nine-millimeter pistol, which was secured by hospital security and surrendered to the NOPD.

This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence in the community.

Amacker faces up to 15 years of imprisonment, up to a $250,000 fine, up to 3 years of supervised release, and a mandatory special assessment fee of $100.

His sentencing is set for October 14, 2025.
