Troy Man Pleads Guilty to 2 Bank Robberies

ALBANY, NEW YORK – In a shocking turn of events, Michael C. Matzen, age 35, of Troy, New York, pleaded guilty to committing two bank robberies over the course of two days in East Greenbush and Latham.

The heists took place on March 19, 2015, and March 20, 2015. In the first incident, Matzen entered a TD Bank branch in East Greenbush with his face partially covered. He presented a teller with a note demanding money and stating he had a gun. The defendant took $500 and then fled the bank.

The following day, Matzen walked into a Trustco Bank branch in Latham with his face partially covered. Again he presented a teller with a note demanding money and stating he had a gun. The defendant took $5,750 and then fled the bank.

Matzen faces up to 20 years in prison, and a term of post-imprisonment supervised release of up to 3 years, when he is sentenced on July 26, 2016 by United States District Judge Gary L. Sharpe. Matzen also faces a fine of up to $250,000, and may be ordered to forfeit the money he took during the robberies, or pay restitution to his victims.

The investigation into the crimes was led by the Federal Bureau of Investigation in coordination with the Colonie Police Department and East Greenbush Police Department, and is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Solomon B. Shinerock.

Matzen’s guilty plea stems from his involvement in the two bank robberies, which saw him steal a total of $6,250 from the banks. His sentence is set to be handed down on July 26, 2016.
