Houma Man Charged with Possession of Child Pornography
A 30-year-old man from Houma, Louisiana, has been taken into custody after being charged with possession of images and videos depicting the sexual exploitation of children under the age of twelve.
According to U.S. Attorney Kenneth A. Polite, Michael Chaevin was previously charged in a one-count Indictment by a federal grand jury with possession of images and videos depicting the sexual exploitation of children under the age of twelve.
Chaevin faces a maximum term of imprisonment of twenty years, followed by up to a lifetime of supervised release, and a $250,000 fine per count. He can also be required to register as a sex offender.
This case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse launched in May 2006 by the U.S. government.
United States Attorney Polite reiterated that the Indictment is merely a charge and that the guilt of the defendant must be proven beyond a reasonable doubt.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation was praised for their work in investigating this matter. Assistant United States Attorney Jordan Ginsberg is in charge of the prosecution.
