Michael Darnell Ramsey, Attempted Sex Trafficking of a Minor, West Virginia 2020
BECKLEY, W.Va. - In a shocking case of attempted sex trafficking, 47-year-old Michael Darnell Ramsey of Rainelle, West Virginia, was sentenced to 135 months in prison in federal court.
Ramsey previously pled guilty to engaging in a scheme to pay a 14-year-old minor $200 to engage in two sexual acts via Snapchat. The West Virginia State Police, the Greenbrier County Sheriff’s Department, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s West Virginia Child Exploitation and Human Trafficking Task Force conducted the investigation.
On April 3, 2020, Ramsey traveled to a meeting location in Greenbrier County to meet the minor, at which time he was placed under arrest. The case was prosecuted as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to combat child sexual exploitation and abuse.
As part of his sentence, Ramsey will serve 25 years of supervised release and be required to register as a sex offender upon release from prison. United States District Judge Frank W. Volk imposed the sentence. Assistant United States Attorney Jennifer Rada Herrald handled the prosecution.
This case serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing struggle to protect West Virginia children from predators like Ramsey. The hard work and dedication of law enforcement agencies and prosecutors are crucial in bringing these individuals to justice.
