Sioux City Man Pleads Guilty to Possession of Stolen Firearm

A Sioux City man has pleaded guilty to possession of a firearm by a felon in federal court in Sioux City, Iowa. Michael David Groves, 26, admitted to possessing a stolen 12-gauge shotgun, which was reported stolen after a burglary in Plymouth County, Iowa.

Groves, a convicted felon, knew he was prohibited from owning a firearm. He pleaded guilty on September 1, 2022, in federal court in Sioux City. The case was brought as part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a violent crime reduction program that focuses enforcement efforts on the most violent offenders and partners with locally based prevention and reentry programs.

Groves faces a possible maximum sentence of 10 years' imprisonment, a $250,000 fine, and 3 years of supervised release following any imprisonment. He remains in custody of the United States Marshal pending sentencing.

The case was investigated by the United States Marshal Service, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, Federal Bureau of Investigation, Nebraska State Patrol, Sioux City Police Department, and Plymouth County Sheriff's Office. Assistant United States Attorney Ron Timmons is prosecuting the case.

The sentencing hearing will be set after a presentence report is prepared. Groves' exact sentence will be determined at that time.
