Felon in Possession of Firearm Lands 113 Months in Federal Prison
Eugene, Ore. – In a shocking display of disregard for the law, Michael Dean Wasson, 53, was sentenced to the statutory maximum of 113 months and 15 days in federal prison for his brazen attempt to possess a firearm and ammunition as a convicted felon.
According to court documents, on June 29, 2012, Oregon State Police Troopers and Officers with the Lane County Sheriff’s Office responded to a distress call from Wasson’s elderly parents, who reported that he had threatened to kill them while carrying a loaded AK-47 type semiautomatic rifle.
Upon arrival, Wasson turned towards the officers with the rifle, prompting a Trooper to fire a shot that forced him to drop the firearm. The defendant’s long history of felony convictions, including rape in the first degree, only added to the severity of the situation.
This case was the result of a joint investigation by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the Oregon State Police, and the Lane County Sheriff’s Office, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Nathan J. Lichvarcik leading the prosecution. The Lane County District Attorney’s Office is also prosecuting Wasson on unrelated charges stemming from an alleged assault.
Wasson’s sentence marks a significant blow to his attempts to skirt the law, and serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of reckless behavior. As he begins his 113 months and 15 days behind bars, Wasson will also face three years of supervised release upon his release from prison.
This case is a prime example of the importance of community vigilance and swift action in the face of potential threats. It is a testament to the dedication of law enforcement agencies and prosecutors who work tirelessly to keep our communities safe.
As we continue to push for justice and accountability, it is essential to recognize the tireless efforts of those who put themselves in harm’s way to protect the public. In this case, the actions of the Oregon State Police Troopers and Lane County Sheriff’s Office officers undoubtedly prevented potential tragedy and ensured that Wasson’s reckless behavior would not go unpunished.
