Man Sentenced to Prison for Possession of Sawed-Off Shotgun

A Dubuque man has been sentenced to federal prison for possessing an unregistered sawed-off shotgun.

Michael Dennison, 41, was sentenced to one year in federal prison on October 26, 2018, after pleading guilty to possession of an unregistered short-barreled shotgun.

The crime occurred in the summer of 2017 until February 16, 2018, when police officers seized the gun during a search warrant executed at Dennison's home. The gun was loaded, and officers also found methamphetamine hidden in a hole cut out from the mattress.

Dennison provided a urine sample that tested positive for methamphetamine, further incriminating him in the crime.

The case was brought as part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and making neighborhoods safer.

Dennison must also serve a two-year term of supervised release after the prison term. He is currently being held in the United States Marshal's custody until he can be transported to a federal prison.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Justin Lightfoot and investigated by the Dubuque Police Department and the Dubuque County Sheriff's Office.

Dennison's crime is a serious offense, and his sentencing serves as a reminder of the consequences of such actions. The community can rest assured that those who engage in violent crime will be held accountable.

Dennison's case is a prime example of the success of the Project Safe Neighborhoods program in reducing violent crime and making our neighborhoods safer.
