In a shocking turn of events, Michael Edwards, a 32-year-old resident of Chicago, was brought to justice in a federal criminal case that spanned over a year. The case, filed on January 24, 2018, in the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, charged Edwards with multiple counts of violent crime.
The indictment, which was unsealed on February 14, 2018, alleged that Edwards was involved in a string of violent robberies that took place across the city of Chicago in 2017. According to investigators, Edwards and his accomplices targeted several businesses, using force and intimidation to steal cash and other valuables.
Edwards was charged with four counts of interference with commerce by robbery, as well as one count of possession of a firearm in furtherance of a crime of violence. The charges carried a maximum sentence of up to 20 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000.
After a lengthy investigation, Edwards was arrested on February 10, 2018, and subsequently indicted by a federal grand jury. The case was prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Illinois, with Assistant U.S. Attorney, Emily Denell, serving as the lead prosecutor.
On June 20, 2019, Edwards pleaded guilty to all counts of the indictment. Later, on September 6, 2019, he was sentenced to 10 years in federal prison, followed by 3 years of supervised release. Edwards was also ordered to pay a fine of $10,000 and to forfeit any proceeds from the commission of the crimes.
