According to court documents, Jones was charged with one count of armed robbery, a violent crime that carried a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison. The charges stemmed from a brazen daytime robbery that took place on July 20, 2012, at a local convenience store. Witnesses reported that Jones, wearing a black mask and carrying a handgun, entered the store and demanded cash from the clerk. The clerk, fearing for his life, handed over an undisclosed amount of money, and Jones fled the scene.
The investigation, led by the FBI, culminated in Jones’s arrest on August 15, 2012. He was subsequently charged with the federal crime and held without bail until his trial.
On February 22, 2013, Jones’s trial began in the ILND Federal District Court. The prosecution presented a mountain of evidence, including eyewitness testimony, security footage, and physical evidence linking Jones to the crime scene. After a grueling four-day trial, the jury delivered a guilty verdict, finding Jones guilty of the armed robbery charge.
In a sentencing hearing held on May 15, 2013, Judge Samuel Der-Yeghiayan sentenced Jones to 15 years in prison, citing the seriousness of the offense and the need to protect the community from violent crime. Jones was also ordered to pay restitution to the convenience store owner.
