Published January 29, 2015

A Eugene, Oregon, man has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for being a felon in possession of a firearm.

On February 4, 2014, U.S. District Chief Judge Ann Aiken sentenced Michael Lee Fry, 38, of Douglas County, Oregon, to a prison term of 15 years for being a felon in possession of a firearm.

Fry will also be on supervised release for five years after serving his prison term.

The charges against Fry stem from an incident on November 13, 2011, when a Sutherlin police officer stopped Fry's vehicle for a traffic violation and for suspicion that Fry was driving under the influence.

A female passenger ran away from the vehicle, and Fry was detained for not having a driver's license. A pat down of Fry revealed a knife with crystal residue, and he showed several signs of having used methamphetamine.

The vehicle was searched, and a pistol was located in Fry's backpack. Fry's felony convictions include unlawful use of a weapon, delivery of a controlled substance, attempt to elude, and first degree burglary.

The case was investigated by the Sutherlin Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Jeffrey S. Sweet.
