Baltimore, Maryland - In a shocking case of corporate greed, Michael P. Scudder, a 32-year-old Reisterstown resident and owner of Precision Solutions, Inc., was sentenced to 18 months in prison for his role in a massive mail fraud scheme that cost the U.S. Postal Service over $1.6 million in unpaid postage.
According to court documents, Scudder forged bulk mail forms, allowing him to mail over 8,860 trays of mail without paying the required postage. The scheme, which lasted from January to December 2012, involved Scudder modifying verification forms to reflect that a larger amount of mail had been paid for, when in fact, it had not.
Scudder and his employees presented the forged forms at several Postal facilities in Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey, resulting in a total loss of revenue to the U.S. Postal Service of $1,639,912.89. The scheme was uncovered after an investigation by the U.S. Postal Inspection Service - Washington Division.
Chief U.S. District Judge Catherine C. Blake sentenced Scudder to 18 months in prison, followed by three years of supervised release. In addition to his prison sentence, Scudder was ordered to pay restitution to the U.S. Postal Service in the amount of $1,639,912.89.
United States Attorney Rod J. Rosenstein praised the U.S. Postal Inspection Service - Washington Division for its work in the investigation and thanked Assistant U.S. Attorney Joyce K. McDonald, who prosecuted the case.
Scudder's scheme was a brazen attempt to fleece the U.S. Postal Service of millions of dollars in unpaid postage. His sentence serves as a reminder that corporate greed will not be tolerated, and those who engage in such behavior will be held accountable.
In a statement, Scudder's lawyer said that his client takes full responsibility for his actions and is committed to making amends. However, the damage has already been done, and the U.S. Postal Service will never recover the millions of dollars lost as a result of Scudder's scheme.
