Convicted Felon Sentenced to 7 Years in Prison for Gun Possession

SHREVEPORT, La. - Michael Roy Reed, a 44-year-old resident of Keithville, Louisiana, has been sentenced to serve seven years in federal prison for illegally possessing a .380-caliber pistol.

On Tuesday, U.S. District Judge Elizabeth E. Foote handed down the sentence to Reed, who had previously pleaded guilty on February 12, 2019, to one count of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

The charges against Reed stem from a January 23, 2018, incident in which a concerned citizen reported to the Shreveport Police that he had received a Colt, Model: Mustang XSP, .380-caliber pistol from Reed as payment for work on his truck.

Further investigation revealed that the pistol was one of seven firearms reported stolen from a pawn shop days earlier, and that Reed was a convicted felon. Reed had been convicted in Ouachita Parish on July 8, 2013, for illegal possession of stolen things, conspiracy to distribute cocaine, and possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine.

Under federal law, it is illegal for anyone who has been convicted of a felony to be in possession of any firearm or ammunition.

The ATF and Shreveport Police Department conducted the investigation, with Assistant U.S. Attorneys Jessica D. Cassidy and Allison D. Bushnell prosecuting the case.

Reed's conviction is part of the Department of Justice's Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) initiative, which aims to reduce violent crime through a comprehensive approach that includes law enforcement, community prevention, and reentry programs.

Reed's sentence serves as a reminder of the serious consequences that can result from violating federal firearms laws.
