A Franklin woman was sentenced to 24 months in prison for stealing more than $61,500 from her employer.

Michelle Leann Berry-Ortemond, 41, of Franklin, La., made off with a staggering $61,696.41 from a Lafayette construction company from February 2010 to April 2011.

Berry-Ortemond was employed at the company during that time and used her position to forge and cash forged checks, initiate wire transfers, and access a line of credit in the corporation's name without consent.

Her deceitful actions were uncovered and she was subsequently charged with one count of wire fraud.

Berry-Ortemond pleaded guilty to the charges on May 25, 2016, and was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Patricia Minaldi to 24 months in prison.

She was also sentenced to three years of supervised release and ordered to pay $55,346.66 restitution.

The U.S. Secret Service conducted the investigation into Berry-Ortemond's crimes, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Robert C. Abendroth prosecuted the case.

Berry-Ortemond's crimes were a serious betrayal of trust and a clear abuse of her position.

The people of Louisiana can take comfort in knowing that justice has been served and that the perpetrator of this crime is facing the consequences of her actions.
