Wilmington Man Sentenced for Role in Heroin Trafficking Organization

Miguel Angel Diaz, a 40-year-old man from the Bronx, New York, has been sentenced to 121 months in prison for his role in a heroin trafficking organization in Wilmington, Delaware.

According to court documents, Diaz served as the source of supply for the 30th Street Crew, a Wilmington-based drug organization. He was arrested on March 25, 2014, at JFK International Airport upon his return from the Dominican Republic.

Diaz has been held without bail since his arrest and has been convicted of conspiracy to distribute heroin. This is his second federal drug trafficking conviction, following a 2007 conviction in the Southern District of New York for distributing five or more kilograms of cocaine.

As part of his operation, Diaz shipped up to 200 logs of heroin twice a month to members of the 30th Street Crew in Wilmington, with each shipment estimated to have a street value of between $40,000 and $70,000. To conceal these shipments, Diaz used multiple cell phones, spoke in code, and employed a drug courier.

The 30th Street Crew used a residence at 3000 N. Madison Street, Wilmington, as its headquarters, which served as a retail center for drug distribution and was also a center for violence, including two shootings that occurred outside the residence in November and December 2011.

The investigation into the 30th Street Crew was led by the FBI, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, the Wilmington Police Department, and the State of Delaware Department of Corrections Division of Probation and Parole, with critical support from Delaware State Police, Delaware Division of Gaming Enforcement, New Castle County Police Department, United States Marshals Service, and the United States Department of Agriculture.

Acting United States Attorney David C. Weiss thanked the federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies for their participation in the investigation and stated, 'This investigation not only dismantled a large-scale drug trafficking organization that had heretofore operated with near-impunity on the streets of Wilmington, but brought to justice the person responsible for supplying the heroin.'

The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys Jamie M. McCall and Elizabeth Van Pelt.
