A 25-year-old Brownsville resident has been ordered to federal prison for receipt and possession of child pornography and transferring obscene material to a minor, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Texas.
Miguel Angel Lopez pleaded guilty on October 24, 2019, and was sentenced on Friday by U.S. District Judge Fernando Rodriguez Jr. to a total of 180 months in federal prison.
Lopez was further ordered to pay $36,000 in restitution to the victims and will serve 15 years on supervised release following completion of his prison term, during which time he will have to comply with numerous requirements designed to restrict his access to children and the internet.
He will also be ordered to register as a sex offender.
The investigation began in January 2018, when authorities initiated an investigation into child pornography sharing on the internet, which led them to Lopez’s residence in Brownsville.
Law enforcement executed a search at his residence and seized several electronic and digital devices. Forensic analysis resulted in the discovery of 63,975 unique images and 853 unique videos of child pornography.
Lopez will remain in custody pending transfer to a U.S. Bureau of Prisons facility to be determined in the near future.
The case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in May 2006 to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse.
