Miguel Rodriguez, Fentanyl/Heroine Trafficking, Pennsylvania 2019
A 53-year-old man from Brooklyn, New York, has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for possessing a large quantity of fentanyl and heroin mix intending to distribute it in Western Pennsylvania.
Miguel Rodriguez, formerly of Belmont Avenue, Brooklyn, pleaded guilty to a Superseding Indictment charging him with violating the federal narcotics laws.
According to the court documents, law enforcement agents encountered Rodriguez on July 27, 2019, when he departed a bus in downtown Pittsburgh, which had recently arrived from New York City. A subsequent search of his bags revealed a large bag of powder containing a mixture of fentanyl and heroin, scheduled controlled substances under federal law.
In connection with his guilty plea, Rodriguez admitted to knowingly possessing the controlled substance intending to distribute it in the Western District of Pennsylvania.
Assistant United States Attorney Jerome A. Moschetta prosecuted the case on behalf of the government.
United States Attorney Cindy K. Chung commended the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Pennsylvania State Police for their investigation leading to the successful prosecution of Rodriguez.
Rodriguez's sentence was imposed by Senior United States District Judge David S. Cercone. The charges against Rodriguez include possessing 400 grams or more of fentanyl and heroin intending to redistribute it.
The case serves as a reminder of the ongoing efforts to combat the opioid epidemic and the severe consequences associated with fentanyl and heroin trafficking.
