Published May 17, 2021

Raleigh, N.C. - In a federal courthouse in Raleigh, North Carolina, 19-year-old Mikal Huff was sentenced to 121 months in prison for his role in a heroin trafficking organization.

Huff, a validated gang member from High Point, North Carolina, was arrested on November 14, 2019, by the New Hanover County Sheriff's Office Narcotics Unit after a sting operation.

According to court documents, Huff and another suspect, Shyreek Thatch, left an apartment on Park Avenue in Wilmington, North Carolina, and arrived at a meeting location where law enforcement attempted to arrest them. Thatch was arrested after he threw down a quantity of heroin, and Huff fled on foot, losing a shoe and a loaded .40 caliber handgun in the process.

Huff was arrested shortly after the incident, and a search warrant was served on the Park Avenue apartment, where law enforcement found more than half a kilogram of a fentanyl/heroin mixture, almost two ounces of methamphetamine, and a quantity of crack cocaine, as well as more than $4,000 in cash.

The investigation, which was part of an Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETF) investigation, uncovered that Thatch and Huff had transported drugs from the High Point area for distribution in New Hanover County, with Huff providing armed protection for the drugs.

Huff was also on probation for Discharging a Firearm into an Occupied Property at the time of his arrest.

Shyreek Thatch, who was previously sentenced for his role in the drug trafficking organization, received a prison sentence of 108 months in prison.

The investigation was led by the Drug Enforcement Administration, Federal Bureau of Investigation, Wilmington Police Department, and the New Hanover County Sheriff's Office, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Timothy Severo prosecuting the case.

Huff's sentencing was announced by G. Norman Acker, III, acting U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of North Carolina.
