Miles Michael Goings, Robbery, South Dakota 2019
In a shocking turn of events, Miles Michael Goings, a 25-year-old Rapid City resident, was sentenced to 8 years and 1 month in federal prison for his role in two brazen robberies in the Pine Ridge area.
According to court documents, Goings was convicted of two counts of Robbery, stemming from incidents that took place on June 10, 2018, and July 21, 2018. The first incident occurred at a residence in Pine Ridge, where Goings allegedly took the victim's property and assaulted him by kicking him in the face before stealing his vehicle.
The second incident took place at Pizza Hut in Pine Ridge, where Goings forcibly took a vehicle from the parking lot. The victims in both cases were left shaken and traumatized by the events.
Goings was indicted by a federal grand jury in November 2018 and was subsequently arrested. He was turned over to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service after his sentencing on June 28, 2019.
Assistant U.S. Attorneys Megan Poppen and Cassandra DeCoste prosecuted the case, with the Bureau of Indian Affairs - Office of Justice Services leading the investigation.
As part of his sentence, Goings was ordered to pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund and to pay restitution to the victims on each count. The total amount of restitution has not been disclosed.
The case serves as a stark reminder of the need for law enforcement to crack down on violent crime in our communities. We hope that this sentence brings closure to the victims and their families.
