Monique Pablo-Johnson, Involuntary Manslaughter, Arizona 2016

TUCSON, Ariz. - A Tohono O'odham woman has been sentenced to 11 years in prison for her role in a deadly car crash that killed her daughter and granddaughter.

Monique Pablo-Johnson, 47, of Sells, Ariz., was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Rosemary Marquez to 11 years in custody on Aug. 15, 2016. Pablo-Johnson had previously pleaded guilty to two counts of involuntary manslaughter.

The crash occurred on June 6, 2013, when Pablo-Johnson was driving recklessly on SR 86, near Sells, on the Tohono O'odham Nation. She was under the influence of alcohol and cocaine at the time of the crash, according to authorities. Pablo-Johnson's daughter, 25, and granddaughter, 7 weeks old, were ejected from the vehicle and died at the scene.

Pablo-Johnson moved from the driver's seat to the front passenger seat after the crash and falsely claimed to the police that her daughter was the driver at the time of the crash.

At sentencing, Judge Marquez sentenced Pablo-Johnson to eight years of imprisonment for the death of her seven-week-old granddaughter and three more consecutive years for the death of her daughter.

The investigation in this case was conducted by the Tohono O'odham Police Department. The prosecution was handled by Serra M. Tsethlikai, Assistant U.S. Attorney, District of Arizona, Tucson.

The case number is CR-14-1361-TUC-RM, and the release number is 2016-063.
