Methamphetamine Distribution Plague Continues in Iowa

Mason City, IA - A recent sentencing has left the community shaken as a local man has been handed a lengthy prison term for his involvement in the distribution of methamphetamine.

According to court records, 40-year-old Monroe Thompson was sentenced on February 7, 2025, to 262 months in federal prison for his role in the distribution of a controlled substance. This comes after Thompson pleaded guilty to conspiracy to distribute a controlled substance on August 28, 2024.

Evidence presented in the case revealed that between May 2023 and August 2023, Thompson was part of an ongoing drug conspiracy based in Mason City, Iowa, to distribute methamphetamine and fentanyl. In a shocking twist, it was discovered that Thompson had been purchasing methamphetamine from sources working with law enforcement.

A search warrant executed at Thompson's residence led to the discovery of counterfeit M-30 pills containing fentanyl. This revelation has sparked concerns about the severity of the issue and the need for increased law enforcement efforts.

Thompson's extensive criminal history includes several convictions for possession of controlled substances, possession of a firearm by a felon, and assault - inflicting serious injury in Iowa, as well as convictions in Illinois, Minnesota, and Wisconsin for possession of controlled substances, selling or manufacturing controlled substances, and possession of firearms.

As part of his sentence, Thompson will also serve a 5-year term of supervised release after completing his prison term. With no parole available in the federal system, Thompson will serve the entirety of his sentence.

The case was investigated by the Cerro Gordo County Sheriff's Department and the Iowa Division of Narcotics Enforcement, with Assistant United States Attorney Ron Timmons prosecuting the case.

Thompson is currently being held in the United States Marshal's custody until he can be transported to a federal prison. The case file number is 24-3014, and further information can be found at https://ecf.iand.uscourts.gov/cgi-bin/login.pl.
