Nelson Santini, Distribution of Fentanyl, Connecticut 2021
A New Haven man has been charged with distributing fentanyl, a powerful synthetic opioid responsible for numerous overdose deaths in the United States. According to a federal indictment, Nelson Santini, 27, of New Haven, Connecticut, faces a single count of distribution of 40 grams or more fentanyl.
The indictment alleges that on August 13, 2021, members of the FBI’s Safe Streets Task Force made a controlled purchase of approximately 50 grams of fentanyl from Santini. If convicted, Santini faces a mandatory minimum term of imprisonment of five years and a maximum term of imprisonment of 40 years.
Santini has been detained since his arrest on a federal criminal complaint on April 6, 2022. U.S. Attorney Leonard C. Boyle stressed that an indictment is not evidence of guilt and charges are only allegations, requiring proof beyond a reasonable doubt for conviction.
The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Conor M. Reardon and Robert S. Ruff. The investigation is being conducted by the FBI’s Safe Streets Task Force, which includes members from the New Haven Police Department, Milford Police Department, Hamden Police Department, East Haven Police Department, Connecticut State Police, and Connecticut Department of Correction.
Fentanyl distribution has become a growing concern in the United States, with overdose deaths attributed to the substance skyrocketing in recent years. The New Haven area has not been immune to this trend, with local law enforcement and federal agencies working together to combat the issue.
Santini’s detention is the latest development in the ongoing fight against fentanyl trafficking in Connecticut. As this case moves forward, it is essential to remember that allegations are not evidence of guilt and that the presumption of innocence applies until proven otherwise.
The New Haven community is advised to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity related to fentanyl distribution to local authorities.
