New Orleans Man Sentenced for Federal Weapons Offense

NEWMAN HOOKER, a 30-year-old man from New Orleans, Louisiana, was sentenced to 42 months imprisonment, followed by three years of supervised release, and a mandatory $100 special assessment fee for being a felon in possession of a firearm.

The U.S. District Judge Barry W. Ashe handed down the sentence on May 25, 2023, for the federal weapons offense.

According to court documents, on May 30, 2022, New Orleans Police Officers executed a search warrant at HOOKER's residence. Officers seized a loaded Glock Model 22 pistol with an extended magazine and a loaded Panzer Arms shotgun belonging to HOOKER. Officers also recovered ammunition for the pistol and shotgun, shotgun drums, and firearms accessories.

This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program bringing together all levels of law enforcement and the communities they serve to reduce violent crime and gun violence, and to make our neighborhoods safer for everyone.

The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the New Orleans Police Department. Assistant United States Attorneys David Berman of the Violent Crimes Unit and Rachal Cassagne of the Narcotics Unit handled the prosecution.

The U.S. Attorney Duane A. Evans announced the sentencing.

Neuman Hooker will serve 42 months in prison followed by three years of supervised release, and pay a $100 special assessment fee.
