Nickolas Sharp, Data Theft and Extortion, New York 2021
Former Employee Charged with Stealing Confidential Data and Extorting Company for Ransom
Nickolas Sharp, a former employee of a New York-based technology company, has been arrested and charged with stealing gigabytes of confidential files from his employer and extorting them for nearly $2 million in ransom.
According to the indictment, Sharp, 41, was employed by the company from August 2018 to April 2021 and had access to sensitive data and systems. He allegedly used this access to download confidential files and then posed as an anonymous hacker to demand a ransom of 50 Bitcoin, equivalent to approximately $1.9 million.
When the company refused to pay the ransom, Sharp allegedly sent misleading news articles to the media, claiming that the company's computer systems had been compromised by a hacker. The articles were later picked up by major news outlets, causing a significant drop in the company's stock price and a loss of billions of dollars in market capitalization.
Sharp was arrested on May 26, 2024, in the District of Oregon and is currently being held without bail. He is expected to appear in court on charges of theft of trade secrets, wire fraud, and computer intrusion.
The case is being prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York, and the FBI's New York Office is leading the investigation.
Sharp's alleged scheme was uncovered after a technical glitch revealed his true identity as the source of the data breach.
He faces up to 25 years in prison if convicted.
