Nosson Sklar, Healthcare Fraud, New York 2024
A devastating healthcare scam has rocked the Empire State as Nosson Sklar, the owner of a physical rehabilitation company, pleaded guilty to submitting over 20 million dollars in fraudulent medical bills to health benefit programs.
The scheme, which spanned from January 2020 to July 2024, involved Sklar submitting claims for medical services to various health care benefit programs, asserting that those services were rendered by a physician who worked with the rehabilitation company. However, the services were never provided, and the physician did not authorize Sklar to submit bills in their name.
According to the Information filed against Sklar, he caused more than 20 million dollars in claims to be submitted to three separate health benefit programs, which listed the physician as having been the rendering provider for the rehabilitation company. Approximately 12.4 million dollars of those claims were eventually paid by the health plans.
Sklar's scheme was brazen, and he even admitted to committing fraud during conversations with the victim physician. He confessed that he had submitted bills under the physician's name because of the money.
The defendant, 56, of New York, New York, pled guilty to one count of health care fraud, which carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison.
The case is being prosecuted by the Office's White Plains Division, with Assistant U.S. Attorneys Jorja N. Knauer and David A. Markewitz in charge of the prosecution.
The U.S. Attorney's Office praised the investigative work of HHS-OIG and FBI in bringing Sklar to justice.
