OXFORD, WI – Another day, another assault behind bars. Demetrius Brown, 47, already serving time for drug trafficking, added nearly three years to his sentence after pleading guilty to brutally attacking a correctional officer at the Federal Correctional Institution in Oxford, Wisconsin. U.S. District Judge William M. Conley handed down the 33-month sentence late last week, a consequence Brown will serve on top of his existing conviction.
The August 24, 2024, attack stemmed from a routine cell search. When a guard discovered contraband within Brown’s cell, all hell broke loose. Brown reportedly launched into a physical assault, leaving the guard with minor injuries. Details of the contraband itself haven’t been released, but it clearly ignited a violent response from the inmate.
Acting United States Attorney Chadwick M. Elgersma’s office didn’t mince words. This wasn’t just about a guard getting hurt; it was about the ripple effect of Brown’s actions. Judge Conley, during sentencing, explicitly stated his concern that Brown’s behavior put other responding staff at risk. The court also noted a disturbing lack of remorse or self-awareness from the defendant.
“He appeared to lack insight into his violent behavior,” Judge Conley reportedly stated. It’s a common refrain in these cases – inmates who refuse to take responsibility, continuing a cycle of violence even within the confines of prison walls. The Bureau of Prisons is already stretched thin; dealing with inmates like Brown is a drain on resources and a constant threat to staff safety.
The investigation was a joint effort between the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Federal Bureau of Prisons, a clear indication of the seriousness with which federal authorities are treating assaults on correctional officers. Assistant U.S. Attorney Steven Ayala successfully prosecuted the case, securing the consecutive sentence that sends a message: attacking a federal employee carries severe consequences.
Brown’s total time behind bars is now significantly extended. While the guard’s injuries were minor, the incident underscores the ever-present danger faced by those working in correctional facilities. This case, like so many others, is a stark reminder that prison isn’t rehabilitation for everyone – and some inmates are simply determined to make life harder for everyone around them.
