Published May 27, 2026

Conspiracy to influence major international sports competitions by doping plagues the world of track and field. In a recent case, a Jacksonville man has been brought to justice for his involvement in this illicit practice.

According to court documents, Paul Alexander Askew, 46, of Jacksonville, conspired with a professional track and field athlete and at least one other person to provide the athlete with testosterone, a banned substance, to improve the athlete’s performances at major international track and field competitions.

The doping was ongoing during the athlete’s competitions in the 2023 Ed Murphey Classic, in Memphis, Tennessee; the 2023 Xiamen Diamond League, in China; and the 2023 Prefontaine Classic, in Eugene, Oregon.

Askew faces a maximum penalty of 10 years in federal prison for his involvement in the doping conspiracy. A sentencing date has not yet been set. United States Attorney Gregory W. Kehoe made the announcement, stating that Askew’s actions were a serious offense against the integrity of international sports competitions.

The case was investigated by the United States Anti-Doping Agency and the Drug Enforcement Administration. Assistant United States Attorney Patrick Flanigan is prosecuting the case.

Askew’s actions have far-reaching consequences for the world of track and field. His involvement in the doping conspiracy undermines the legitimacy of competition and puts athletes at risk of serious harm. The investigation and prosecution of Askew’s case serve as a reminder of the importance of fair play and the consequences of cheating.

In addition to the potential 10-year prison sentence, Askew’s involvement in the doping conspiracy has likely damaged his reputation and credibility within the track and field community. His actions have also raised questions about the effectiveness of anti-doping measures in place within the sport.
