Felony Firearm Charge Ends in 50-Month Prison Sentence

MONTGOMERY, ALABAMA - In a case that turned deadly, Paul David Chapman, 50, of Verbena, Alabama, was sentenced to 50 months in prison for being a felon in possession of a firearm. U.S. Attorney Sandra J. Stewart announced the sentence, which will be followed by three years of supervised release. There is no parole in the federal system.

According to court records, the Chilton County Sheriff’s Office responded to a residence in Verbena on October 9, 2019, after receiving multiple 911 calls, including one from Chapman, stating shots had been fired. Deputies arrived to find Chapman with a gunshot wound, a handgun next to him on the couch, and his wife deceased in the front yard.

Chapman claimed he had exchanged gunfire with another individual after the two argued over Chapman's dog being struck and killed by a car. However, investigators discovered an additional firearm in the residence, leading to charges of being a felon in possession of a firearm.

Chapman's previous felony convictions prohibit him from possessing firearms. He was taken from the residence for medical treatment and is now facing the consequences of his actions.

The case was investigated by the Chilton County Sheriff’s Office and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, with assistance from the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences. Assistant U.S. Attorney Brandon W. Bates prosecuted the case.

The sentence handed down to Chapman serves as a reminder of the severity of violating firearms laws. With his previous convictions and the circumstances surrounding this case, the 50-month prison sentence is a just outcome.

In the aftermath of this tragic event, the community is left to grapple with the consequences of Chapman's actions. The loss of life and the destruction caused by his actions will have a lasting impact on those affected.
