Paul Eric Sherrod Parham, Felon in Possession of a Firearm, Virginia 2020
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – A Newport News man, Paul Eric Sherrod Parham, 38, is headed to prison after pleading guilty to unlawfully possessing a firearm.
According to court documents, Parham was walking in the area of 36th Street and Chestnut Avenue in Newport News on the evening of September 18, 2019, when he was encountered by Newport News Police. At the time, Parham had outstanding warrants for abduction, larceny, assault and battery, and withholding a credit card belonging to another individual.
When officers began to take Parham into custody, he notified them that he was carrying a loaded SCCY, CPX-1, 9mm semiautomatic handgun. Parham, a seven-time convicted felon, pleaded guilty to being a felon in possession of a firearm.
As part of his plea agreement, Parham faces a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison when sentenced on January 4, 2021. However, actual sentences for federal crimes are typically less than the maximum penalties.
The case is part of Project Guardian, the U.S. Attorney's signature initiative to reduce gun violence and enforce federal firearms laws. Project Guardian draws upon the U.S. Attorney's past successful programs to reduce gun violence, enhances coordination of federal, state, local, and tribal authorities in investigating and prosecuting gun crimes, and ensures that federal resources are directed at the criminals posing the greatest threat to our communities.
U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, G. Zachary Terwilliger; Special Agent in Charge of the ATF's Washington Field Division, Ashan M. Benedict; and Chief of Newport News Police, Steve R. Drew, announced the guilty plea.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Peter G. Osyf is prosecuting the case.
Parham's crime dates back to September 18, 2019, and his sentencing is scheduled for January 4, 2021.
The defendant's real full name is Paul Eric Sherrod Parham, and he is a 38-year-old resident of Newport News, Virginia.
