Paul Gordon Day, Armed Bank Robbery, North Carolina 2024
ASHEVILLE, North Carolina - A Tennessee man has been sentenced to 12 years in prison for his role in an armed bank robbery in Asheville, North Carolina. Paul Gordon Day, 37, of Brentwood, Tennessee, was sentenced to 147 months in prison followed by five years of supervised release for the armed robbery of a bank in Asheville, announced Dena J. King, U.S. Attorney for the Western District of North Carolina.
On November 9, 2022, Day robbed a PNC Bank branch located at 8 O'Henry Avenue in Asheville. Day entered the bank wearing a blue cap, sunglasses, a blue surgical mask, a grey sweatshirt, and gloves. He drew a firearm wrapped in a black plastic bag and approached the bank tellers, ordering a customer on the ground and demanding money. The tellers complied, giving Day cash including a GPS tracking device concealed within the money.
Day fled the scene on a bicycle, but law enforcement tracked the GPS device and located him in a vehicle traveling on Interstate 26 toward Weaverville, North Carolina. A traffic stop was conducted, and Day was arrested. The firearm used during the robbery, stolen cash, and GPS tracking device were recovered during the search of the vehicle.
A federal jury found Day guilty of bank robbery using a dangerous weapon and possessing and brandishing of a firearm in furtherance of a crime of violence on January 10, 2024. Day remains in federal custody and will be transferred to the custody of the Federal Bureau of Prisons upon designation of a federal facility.
U.S. Attorney King thanked the FBI, the Asheville Police Department, and the Weaverville Police Department for their investigation of the case. Assistant U.S. Attorney Alex M. Scott of the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Asheville prosecuted the case.
This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program to reduce violent crime and gun violence. The program focuses on fostering trust and legitimacy in communities, supporting community-based organizations, setting strategic enforcement priorities, and measuring results.
Day’s sentence is a result of his conviction on the following charges: bank robbery using a dangerous weapon and possessing and brandishing of a firearm in furtherance of a crime of violence. The case is part of an ongoing effort to combat violent crime and gun violence in the Western District of North Carolina.
