Pine Ridge Man Flees Custody

A 24-year-old man from Pine Ridge, South Dakota, has been accused of escaping from a Community Alternatives of the Black Hills facility in December 2012.

According to court documents, Abraham Yellow Horse, 24, failed to return to the facility after being released on December 15, 2012.

On January 8, 2013, a federal grand jury indicted Yellow Horse on charges of Escape from Custody. He appeared before United States Magistrate Judge Veronica L. Duffy on January 9, 2013, and pleaded not guilty to the indictment.

The maximum penalty for Escape from Custody is 5 years of imprisonment and a $250,000 fine, according to the United States Attorney’s Office. The investigation is being conducted by the United States Marshal’s Service, with Assistant United States Attorney Eric Kelderman prosecuting the case.

Abraham Yellow Horse was remanded to the custody of the United States Marshal. A trial date has not yet been set.

The United States Attorney Brendan V. Johnson emphasized that the charge is merely an accusation, and Yellow Horse is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
