Quiyemabi Summerlin, Sex Trafficking, Michigan 2024
DETROIT, MI - In a devastating case of human exploitation, Quiyemabi Summerlin, a 45-year-old Detroit native, was sentenced to 17.5 years in prison for sex trafficking using force and coercion, maintaining a drug premises, and being a felon in possession of a firearm.
In a gut-wrenching statement, U.S. Attorney Dawn N. Ison revealed that Summerlin preyed on vulnerable women, targeting those struggling with addiction, and lured them into his basement with false promises. Once there, he supplied them with heroin, fentanyl, and cocaine, forcing them to engage in endless commercial sex acts. In some instances, Summerlin used violence to ensure his victims' compliance, and he also raped several of his victims.
Summerlin pleaded guilty to trafficking three victims, but investigators identified 25 women who stayed in his home for some period of time, performing commercial sex acts at his direction. The case was investigated by special agents of the FBI and prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys Sara D. Woodward and Tara Hindelang.
U.S. Attorney Ison denounced Summerlin's actions, calling them 'heinous and deplorable.' 'This defendant treated his victims like commodities,' she stated. 'He targeted vulnerable women and exploited them for his own profit. He manipulated his victims' drug addictions and provided them with a constant supply of heroin and crack cocaine.'
Special Agent in Charge Cheyvoryea Gibson added that sex trafficking, violent acts, and coercion are never acceptable and will be thoroughly investigated by the FBI and local law enforcement partners. Summerlin's sentencing is an important step in healing for those victimized by his actions.
The case is a stark reminder of the dangers of human trafficking and the importance of holding perpetrators accountable. As the Grimy Times continues to investigate and expose these crimes, we urge anyone with information to come forward and help bring justice to victims.
