Rae Jean Araujo Cota, Assault by Striking, Beating, and Wounding, South Dakota 2013

A woman in Eagle Butte, South Dakota, was sentenced for assault after striking, beating, and wounding a victim.

Rae Jean Araujo Cota, 36, was convicted of two counts of Assault by Striking, Beating, and Wounding.

The assaults occurred in Eagle Butte in November and December of 2012, targeting the same victim.

Araujo Cota was indicted by a federal grand jury on January 16, 2013, for Assault with a Dangerous Weapon.

She pleaded guilty to two counts of Assault by Striking, Beating, and Wounding on March 22, 2013.

The investigation was conducted by the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Division.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Mikal Hanson.

Araujo Cota was sentenced to 131 days in custody, 12 months of probation, and a $20 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.

She was remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service to begin serving her sentence.

U.S. Magistrate Judge Mark A. Moreno handed down the sentence on May 30, 2013.
