Rafael Caro Quintero, 'Narco of Narcos,' and Vicente Carrillo Fuentes Face Justice in New York
Two notorious Mexican cartel leaders, Rafael Caro Quintero and Vicente Carrillo Fuentes, have been arraigned in federal court in Brooklyn, New York, on charges related to their roles in the brutal murder of DEA Special Agent Enrique 'Kiki' Camarena and other crimes.
Caro Quintero, known as the 'Narco of Narcos,' was arraigned on a third superseding indictment charging him with four counts, including leading a Continuing Criminal Enterprise, international narcotics distribution conspiracy, and unlawful use of firearms in furtherance of drug trafficking.
Carrillo Fuentes, the former leader of the Juarez Cartel, was arraigned on a superseding indictment charging him with seven counts, including leading a Continuing Criminal Enterprise, cocaine distribution conspiracy, and money laundering conspiracy.
Both men were expelled from Mexico and brought to the United States to face justice. The arraignments marked a significant milestone in the long-running pursuit of these notorious cartel leaders.
United States Attorney John J. Durham praised the bravery of DEA Special Agent Camarena, who was killed in 1985, and vowed to continue the fight against cartel violence.
DEA Special Agent in Charge Frank Tarentino stated that the DEA had pursued Caro Quintero for nearly four decades and was committed to delivering justice for the victims of his crimes.
Rafael Caro Quintero was first indicted in the Eastern District of New York in 2015, and a third superseding indictment was returned against him in 2018.
The men are currently being held in federal custody pending trial.
