Man Sentenced to 33 Years in Prison for Kidnapping and Assaulting Ex-Wife

TULSA, Okla. – Randy Alan Hamett, 64, of Choctaw, was sentenced to 396 months in federal prison, followed by five years of supervised release, for kidnapping and assaulting his ex-wife in April 2017.

U.S. District Judge Claire V. Eagan handed down the sentence, calling the crimes 'harrowing and terrifying.' She also ordered Hamett to pay $4,075 to the victim for medical costs incurred during the ordeal.

On April 21, 2021, a federal jury convicted Hamett on 12 counts, including kidnapping in Indian Country, carjacking, possessing and receiving a stolen firearm and stolen ammunition, and possession of a firearm while subject to a domestic violence protective order.

According to the indictment, on April 25, 2017, Hamett parked his truck at a nearby Wal-Mart and cut a hole in the victim's outside wall to gain entry. He then tased her, pointed his own revolver at her, and bound her hands and feet. Hamett forced the victim into a car, stole a revolver she had purchased after obtaining a protective order against him, and kidnapped her.

The victim was held captive for two days, during which time Hamett threatened to kill himself, her, and anyone who tried to help her. She managed to convince Hamett to let her text her parents and boyfriend, which led to her parents becoming suspicious and contacting the Broken Arrow Police Department. Officers located Hamett and the victim at a hotel in Siloam Springs, Arkansas, where they determined Hamett was holding the victim against her will.

Hamett was previously convicted in federal court for the kidnapping in 2018, but his conviction was reversed on appeal in June 2020. He was retried in September 2020, and the jury convicted him on the 12 counts.

'The victim in this case exemplifies resilience and strength,' said Acting U.S. Attorney Clint Johnson. 'Alisa survived a traumatic assault, faced Randy Hamett through two trials, and is now an advocate for other victims of domestic violence.'
