Pittsburgh Man Sentenced to 9 Years for String of Bank Heists

A 31-year-old man from the East Liberty neighborhood of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, has been handed a lengthy prison sentence for his role in a series of brazen bank robberies.

Rashon Coleman, 31, was sentenced to 110 months in federal prison, followed by three years of supervised release, for his conviction on bank robbery charges. United States District Judge Marilyn J. Horan imposed the sentence on Coleman, who was found guilty of robbing two banks in the Pittsburgh area.

According to court documents, Coleman walked into a bank on April 10, 2023, and shoved a white plastic grocery bag, which appeared to contain a gun, at the teller. He demanded $50,000 in cash, but was given only $904. The following day, Coleman entered a different bank and shouted at the tellers to give him all of the money. He threatened to shoot them if they didn't comply and fled with approximately $4,344.

Pittsburgh Bureau of Police officers responded to the alarm and stopped Coleman, who was found in possession of a bag containing a toy gun and a large amount of cash. He later confessed to robbing both banks and was charged with the two robberies in the Allegheny County Court of Common Pleas.

On May 20, 2023, Coleman was granted permission to leave a community detention facility but failed to return at the designated time. The same day, police responded to another bank robbery in progress at the same bank that Coleman had robbed on April 10, 2023. Coleman was found inside a nearby store with a bag containing the stolen cash.

Assistant United States Attorney Carl J. Spindler prosecuted the case on behalf of the government. Acting United States Attorney Troy Rivetti commended the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Pittsburgh Bureau of Police for their work in investigating the crimes and securing Coleman's conviction.
