Published July 11, 2018

A Nampa man is heading to prison after being found guilty of unlawful possession of a firearm. Raul Efrain Lopez Jr., 36, was sentenced to 92 months in prison followed by three years of supervised release.

Lopez was arrested in November 2017, after law enforcement stopped him while he was driving in Nampa, Idaho. Officers found firearms in the backseat of the car, including a shotgun, three rifles, a handgun, ammunition, and magazines.

Lopez is prohibited from possessing firearms due to a felony conviction for possession of a controlled substance. This was a clear violation of federal law, and Lopez will now face the consequences.

The case was investigated by the Treasure Valley Metro Violent Crimes Task Force, which is comprised of federal, state, and local agencies.

This case was brought as part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and making neighborhoods safer. Attorney General Jeff Sessions has made addressing rising violent crime a top priority.

The case was prosecuted by the Special Assistant U.S. Attorney hired by the Treasure Valley Partnership and the State of Idaho to address gang crimes.
