Raymundo Sierra-Mendez, Passport and Social Security Fraud, Iowa 2014

A 71-year-old man from Mexico has been sent to prison for illegally obtaining a passport and social security benefits.

Raymundo Sierra-Mendez was sentenced on November 25, 2014, to 12 months' imprisonment in Sioux City, Iowa, after pleading guilty to one count of social security fraud and one count of passport fraud on September 18, 2014.

In a plea agreement, Sierra-Mendez admitted to using a fraudulent name, social security card, and birth certificate to obtain a United States passport in 2008 and apply for and obtain social security benefits with the same documents.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Kevin C. Fletcher and investigated by HSI and the Enforcement and Removal Office of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Bureau.

Sierra-Mendez was sentenced by United States District Court Judge Mark W. Bennett to 12 months' imprisonment and a 1-year term of supervised release. There is no parole in the federal system.
